February
For me, February is all about nature, it’s when the mornings start to get lighter, if not drier, as I head out with my dog, looking for snowdrops and keeping an eye out for catkins. It’s a quiet way to acknowledge the slow approach of spring and Imbolc.
But for many, February is defined by the 14th—Valentine’s Day. A day of love and romantic gestures but it can also create anxiety and the pressure of expectation. Will I have a date? Will I receive a card or a gift? Or, perhaps the ultimate romantic gesture—will I receive a proposal? It can also highlight feelings of loneliness or disconnection for those who are single or struggling in relationships.
I have recently heard about the phenonomon of Red Tuesday, which is the Tuesday before Valentines Day and is often associated with a surge in breakups. Couples tend to reassess their relationships as Valentine’s Day approaches, and some choose to end things rather than go through the motions of faking affection.
I also love the newer tradition of Galentine’s Day, where women (or "Gals") come together to celebrate the love and support of their friendships. It’s a wonderful reminder that we can give and receive love not just in romantic relationships, but also in the meaningful connections we share with friends. It’s a beautiful way to honour the unique bond of friendship and the love that can flourish between friends.
